Bone & Joint Health
We are interested in understanding the association of bone mineral density and bone strength measures with weight, weight gain, soft tissue composition, nutritional parameters including vitamin D status, physical activity and steroidal hormones. Arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders cause more disability than any other group of medical conditions. For example, a recent survey found that 9% of females reported osteoarthritis and 10% of women aged 65-74 years had osteoporosis. Youth is a critical time for growth and development and represents a vulnerable time for musculoskeletal development, including development of peak bone mass (PBM).
Given the protection that PBM provides against future fracture risk, it is important to determine how population and lifestyle changes (physical activity , nutritional changes, increasing obesity) influence bone mineral density and joint health in young women.
